Am I Undereating?

I posted earlier that I ate about 300 calories during the day. On the way home from work I walked a little over a mile and a quarter and for dinner I had some rotisserie chicken and a salad, about 700 calories. I’m not hungry. I will have a snack later, a smoothie with frozen fruit and coconut water (it has no coconut oil, but I do like the taste and it has good electrolytes). Still, that will put me only about 1200 calories for the day. I just don’t want any more than that today.

I will have had ample protein for the day and more than five servings of fruits and vegetables. The Calorie Count web site analysis says that I am too low on carbs, but I don’t agree with their minimum, especially for me at this time. They also put me low on calcium, iron and potassium, but I do take supplements which should more than compensate for that.

I’m not going to worry. I will consider it a gift for now. Here is the analysis of today’s food:

  1. This is a very cliche (though prudent, imo) answer to your title: you definitely want to advise your MD or nutritionist about everything you’re telling us for an expert opinion. Maybe you mentioned it, but do you have a health professional monitoring your program? I don’t mean to condescend or impugn here, I’m just looking out for ya, buddy. Very proud of your progress!

    • I have health professionals monitoring every time I fart. I have found though that Doctors who don’t specialize in bariatric medicine usually know less about nutrition than I do. The last so-called nutritionist my Dr. referred me to recommended Egg McMuffins for breakfast.

      • Egg McMuffins! Oy Vey! I shouldn’t talk–In ’99, I lost the 40 pounds I wanted, but I lost it through chain-smoking and speed. Very mature approach, huh? I’ve mostly kept the weight off, but I don’t think I would survive another “rock star diet” like that. I should have done it the smart way, as you have. But like many of my microwave generation, I just wanted the weight off NOW, and I didn’t approach it in terms of a lifestyle transformation, as you have. I continue to be proud of your program.

  2. With the supplements, you’re fine on all except fibre but with all the veggies and fruit, I wonder if that’s accurate. Since you’re diabetic, I’d say the starches are no big loss and if you go back to them at some point, be sure to use whole grain – oatmeal, whole grain breads, brown rice. No whites except cauliflower.

I’m really impressed Phil – you’re sticking to it and that ain’t easy for us couch potatoes. But let me add this – be sure to always wear a belt. When you are walking, your hands are often occupied and one day those pants will just not stay up. Happened to someone I know last July 4. Mind you it was entertaining and my daughter thanked him for not going commando, but all in all, he was happier once we found a belt substitute.

    Egg McMuffins indeed! Fool.

    • I find it odd that they say I was low on fiber (even though it was just a smidge) because their recommended minimum is 25g and I got 25g. I guess they consider 100% low?

Oatmeal and brown rice spike my blood sugar. Rye and pumpernickel breads seem to be ok, but both white and wheat raise it more than I want. Beans and lentils are a good source of fiber and my metabolism seems to tolerate them well.

      • Ahh, your body is even fussier than I thought. It’s good that you are aware of that. Starch is a hard one. I always forget about beans and lentils. I guess because they cook slowly. But edaname can be purchased frozen and easy to nuke. I should get more. I’m checking out the web page where you got your numbers – wow, is that easy! 🙂
        G’nite.

  3. I question that table, are they miligrams or mugrams? Because they are high if they are lol

it also doesnt tell you how many you are supposed to have (or at least i cant see, privacy is a matter of choice x)

as long as you feel fine, you have found your balance =)

    • I didn’t show the whole analysis; it gets rather lengthy. Things like carbohydrates, fats and proteins they express in grams. Minerals they express in milligrams. Their minimum daily requirement of carbohydrates is 188 grams, which I think is too high, especially for someone like me.
