Grouper is Good; Mondays Suck

I had two fillets of grouper this evening, sauteed in a little butter, lemon juice and garlic. It was very fresh and not fishy at all. On the side: broccoli rabe and parsnip/squash puree.

I had breakfast today: a boiled egg and some almonds. Lunch was about six ounces of turkey and a salad.

I will have a smoothie of organic milk and strawberries. I have walked a mile today in nasty cold rain.

Mondays beat the shit out of me. I never get enough sleep. Left to it’s own devices, my body likes to go to bed at 2 or 3 am. In my reckless youth it was 4 or 5. My body likes to get up at 10 am. So on the weekends I move toward my natural cycle, but Monday I have to get up earlier (7 o’clock this morning). After going to bed at 2, 7 seems awfully early. Then the readjustment to work, coming home to sort laundry. What joy. Sorry for complaining. Life is good; Mondays are not.

But – the bright side: I am only working three days this week. I am taking Thursday and Friday off. I am going to Montauk for a couple of days this weekend to take pictures, maybe make a video, stare out at the ocean and drive around the East End of Long Island. I will give you a full report.

The Undertow of Tired

The rain is falling, the air is cold and soggy. On my first day off of three, I did a lot of things around the house that have been put off for a few months, and while the stress of the workload is off, the physical tiredness is starting to catch up. Sometimes when you have to keep going you push yourself and when you finally get a chance to relax, you realize how tired you are. I am going to try to spend the next couple of days actually resting. There is nothing urgent that needs doing except that.

The mac and cheese was ok, but I honestly enjoyed the parsnip and squash puree more. I feel stuffed, which is an unusual feeling. I am about 1400 calories for the day. I may have a snack before bed and I may just go to bed early.

I ran a few errands this afternoon (a half mile of walking) and as I was lugging bags up the stairs I was curious as to how much my packages weighed, since the trip up the stairs was a bit of a struggle. I weighed with the bags, then without. The difference was only 17 lbs, which is less than what I have lost in the last month. Try walking several blocks and up a flight of stairs with 17 lbs and you understand why I feel so much better now.

Spring Fever

Some people got to relax today. After work I went to Hudson River Park and got a little sunshine and snapped some pictures. I walked about a mile and a half today. I went to bed early last night, but got up about an hour and a half earlier than the alarm this morning. Knowing I had to go to the office, I couldn’t get back to sleep. In about a week and a half the tax season madness will be over for this year. If I were not eating better and walking as much as i am, I know I would be more tired and stressed than I am. But it was nice to get a little daylight outside today, although it didn’t seem to be as warm as forecast.

For dinner I made oyster stew. I used whole milk and skim milk mixed (is that equal to 2% or what?) and half a cup of really fresh, plump oysters, a little bit of onion and a pat of butter to tenderize the onions. A little high on animal fat, but it was tasty. I made a puree of parsnip and yellow squash, which was one of the best things I have ever tasted. So simple (steam the two together, blend thoroughly with about a teaspoon of olive oil, salt and pepper. Perfect.) I also had some steamed broccoli and cauliflower. Altogether about 550 calories. That puts me at about 1300 for the day so far.

Later I will have a smoothie of skim milk and frozen strawberries and be right on target for food intake today. Probably a little heavy on the dairy, but I don’t eat dairy but about a couple of days a week.
